When I came home, I felt so full in my head and my heart. We took loads of breaks for yoga, writing, time to interact, lots of lunch stops and time to reflect.

There was immediately something powerful about a group of women hiking. I also did a remote emergency-care first-aid course, and now I’m working towards a mountain leader award.įor the first hike, I put up a notice on Facebook and I couldn’t believe it when 40 women signed up. I took the mountain skills 1 and 2 courses with Mountaineering Ireland, which teach you personal proficiency. I set up Galz Gone Wild in 2018 after looking at all the hiking communities for women around the world and thinking we should have one here. They were great groups, but they were always focused on getting from A to B as quickly as possible, whereas I’d be stopping and hugging trees and taking photos and chatting, and they’d be shouting at me to catch up. A huge weight lifted off my shoulders and I knew this was where I wanted to be.įrom then, I went on loads of hikes, but something was missing. It was the first time in years that I had felt joy. It was with them, on the top of Ticknock, that I had my ‘aha moment’. I got in touch with Project Dublin Mountain Partnership, and they let me come out with them to photograph their volunteers. I couldn’t feel happiness, I couldn’t feel sadness, so, with the help of my doctor, I weaned myself off antidepressants.Īfter that, I went and studied photography in St Kevin’s College in Crumlin and decided to become an adventure photographer. There is a place for western medicine, but for me, I just felt numbed. I was suffering from suicidal thoughts, but I thought that was normal.Īfter that, I stayed in Ireland to repair and I was on anti-depressants for two years.

It was the first time I’d had a chance to pause, and I was diagnosed with depression.

In 2015, I came home from London, where I was working in IT.
